Frequently Asked Questions

FAQS about counseling and psychotherapy:

“A common concern if you have not had counselling before, is whether you will be judged.
A non-judgemental attitude is the most basic attitude for a successful counsellor, and underpins my work with all clients. Research shows that the most effective therapy comes from the quality of the relationship with clients, hence it works best when people can feel they are not going to be judged, and that they are being listened to and heard.”

Will my information be private?

“Counselling is confidential. I am bound by a professional code of ethics which specifically addresses the need for privacy of information. This is extremely important to the counselling process. In rare circumstances confidentiality may need to be broken, by law, and it involves assessment of the risks of harm to self or others. The circumstances in which this occurs is explained during the first session.”

I am anxious that a stranger will not be able to understand or help me.

“Again this is a common concern. My training and experience enable me to assist where friends or family may not have the objectivity or skills to help you. Please feel free to raise this me.”

Will my beliefs be respected?

“This is part of having a non-judgemental approach and applies to cross-cultural issues, religious and spiritual beliefs and sexual preferences.”

How long will I need to come, and how often?

“Usually clients come once a week. Sometimes this frequency will vary to once a fortnight or even monthly. This will become clear as you progress and we discuss how you are improving.
We work at your pace, so that you always feel your questions are answered in regard to how long it takes. Sometimes people get what they need quite quickly, and for others a longer slower process is useful for them.”

Can I get a Medicare rebate?

“At present a rebate is available if you have seen your GP and she/he places you on a Mental Health Care Plan.”
