Couples Therapy and Relationship Counselling:

“Some couples come to counselling simply wanting to enhance their relationship, others come as they are having difficulties together. Some couples come because they at a stalemate in their relationships, and uncertain whether to stay together or separate.”

Couples therapy is a specialty area which requires a specialized approach. The approaches I use are informed by training in finding the underlying ways in which the couple have come together, plus their personality features which define their relationship together.

Family of origin work gives assistance through helping each person learn how their family of origin has shaped the sense they have about themselves and thus how this impacts on their current relationship.

Family systems therapy uses knowledge about interacting systems with each person affecting the other. For instance, couples develop their own style of interacting which tends to be cyclical in the sense that one person’s behaviour effects the other such that they respond in what becomes a predictable manner. This can lead to reinforcing the first person’s behaviour. Potentially this can form a repeating pattern of conflict.

“My work is in helping couples become aware of the dynamic which gets set up between them, then with helping them learn how to manage situations such that the relationship can be improved and enhanced.”

There are a number of theorists on whose work I draw when working with couples. When couples can see clearly how they are making the relationship both work in some ways and not in others, there is great interest in learning. There is the potential for greater connection and satisfaction. Most couples who come for couple therapy find it illuminating, and benefit by developing a greater awareness and understanding of what happens between them and how they can improve their relationship.
